A Fine of US$11,000 If You Don’t State That You’re Paid To Write That Review

BLOGGERS WHO GET GIFTS OR MONEY MAY HAVE TO OWN UP

RULES WILL MAKE REVIEWS TRANSPARENT

Did anyone read the article on Straits Times today about the Media Development Authority (MDA) looking at stricter disclosure rules for bloggers?

If you're a blogger/writer/user of the internet and write reviews/articles, you MAY soon have to make clear and conspicuous disclosures if, for examples, you have written a review on a restaurant after having been treated a feast there.

"The penalty for flouting this rule in blogs or postings in Twitter, Facebook or YouTube: A fine of US$11,000 (S$15,360)."

"Consumers Association of Singapore executive director Seah Seng Choon said disclosure regulations would enable consumers to distinguish between advertorials and genuine reviews."

How do you feel about the idea of this new rule?

While I think it's only just that online readers & followers of a blog know if a write-up was written genuinely or if the blogger was paid money/products, wouldn't it hard to tackle users of the world-wide-web? Does this rule apply for all users in Singapore, Singaporeans or the www?

Who came up with these numbers?

And where does all the money from fines go to?

My first time waxing… And other hair removal methods

To wax, shave, tweeze or epilate?Last Friday, I went to to STRIP @ Wheelock Place to wax my underarms... for the first time in my life.

I wouldn't say that it didn't hurt at all but it was definitely quick - didn't take more than 10 minutes and I simply looooooved the yummy smell of the chocolate wax they used.

It's been 3 days since I waxed my underarms and I am so amazed that no hair has grown back yet! This is so much better than shaving and IPL!

Speaking of IPL (Intensed Pulse Light - known as a semi-temporary hair removal), I signed up for an 8-session IPL session at STRIP Paragon late last year. It costed $1,400 and I finished all 8 sessions by about June this year and I think it was a waste of money altogether. I wrote them a letter of letter of dissatisfaction of service.

Here's an excerpt:

"I am extremely disappointed with the results because I distinctly recall coming back every 4-6 weeks with dissatisfaction and doubt. By the 6th session, I was not only seeing any noticeable changes, the reason for the lack of the result explained to me by the sales staff, was that the machine you previously had was not as good as the machine you had just brought in. (At this point, I've went for about 6 sessions using the 'old machine'. I still had to shave because even after almost 2 weeks, hair was still growing back instead of 'falling off on it's own' as it should be.)

At that point, your sales staff tried to up-sell the same package for almost half the price – to get the results that I should have gotten with the package I paid for, except this time, you had a “better” machine.

I believe this is very unethical because I paid for results and if those results are not apparent, I should not be subjected to pay more to get what I was originally promised. (Having a "better" machine is no excuse!)"

*     *     *     *     *

I've asked for a partial refund but they have refused it because it was against their company policy. Instead, they offered 3 free sessions because they believed that even after almost 1 year of going for this treatment and spending more than $1400, it just wasn't enough. To make situations worse, the management made me go inside the room room so my therapist could have a look at my underarms. But it wasn't just my therapist and I ALONE, 2 other therapists were there as well to have a "look".

It felt like an interrogation more than any sort of evaluation.

After about what felt like about an hour of trying to explain why I wasn't seeing the results I should have, I realized that they were trying to turn it around by making it seem like it was my fault for not religiously following the after-care of IPL treatments such as not shaving, staying out of the sun, making sure I come back within 4-6 weeks and also probably because I'm an exception of the rare occasions when just like every other customers, I have thicker hair follicles and need to go for more sessions. Yes, I guess there are people who spend another $600 even though they weren't seeing results.

*     *     *     *     *

Anyway, just because the IPL treatments that I got from STRIP did not (and perhaps will not) work for me, it is not my intention to boycott anyone or any company. While I will not recommend that treatment to anyone, I obviously still went back to STRIP for waxing because everyone deserves a second chance, and not all services that they provide are bad.

However, I do believe that they really need to practice better customer service and customer care. Instead of up-selling package 'deals', provide the details and pricing of these deals in clear print so your customer can at least take a moment of their own personal time to consider it.

If details like this do not come in fine print, how will your customers know that you are not changing the price around and what is the real value of the service you are providing?

*     *     *     *     *

If you want to go for waxing, I say go for it. Go to STRIP because the chocolate hard wax ($19++) is something you should try at least once. It's quite an experience.

Results can last 2 to 6 weeks depending on the individual’s hair re-growth. In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week. Heat stimulates hair growth, therefore hair grows quicker in the summer than in the winter. With regular waxing the length of time between treatments will increase. Continued waxing results in sparse hair re-growth.

Excessive shaving and use of hair removing creams with severe chemicals are the major causes of dark armpits. Avoid shaving and hair removing creams. Waxing removes hairs from root and helps to remove the layer of dead skin. Tweezing is a no-no as it may irritate your skin, unhygienic and would take too much time! I haven't tried depilating before but according to Melissa Faith Yeo, she loves it.

I may  try it one day.

But for now, I might want to try waxing other areas of my body... ;)

Have you ever had any good/bad/funny experiences from waxing, IPL treatment, shaving, depilating or tweezing?

The Most Fattening Drink

I was just reading womenshealthmag.com & I am appalled to find out that a drink could be 2,010 calories!

The PB&C shake from Cold Stone is officially the most fattening drink in the world!

It is currently the Worst Drink in America with 2,010 calories, 131 grams of fat and 153 grams of sugar.

pbc-cold-stone

PB&C is intended to denote peanut butter and chocolate, but the more accurate translation might be potbellies and cardiovascular disease.

That almost made my favorite drink - bubble milk tea with tapioca pearls - seem like an innocent, mere 510 calorie drink. Almost.

Love For Pink: The Pink Arrow Project

When I read about this, I couldn't help but want to share it with everyone. NOT only because I find some men who wear pink really cute, but also the fact that these guys are doing it for a good cause.

Last year, the Lowell Red Arrows football team in Michigan showed their support to raise the awareness of breast cancer by donning pink football jerseys and some even wearing names of those close to them affected by cancer.

To learn more about The Pink Arrow Project, go to their website here.

Can’t Do Anything About Being Fat…

Health & Fitness

In my previous post (titled 'Too Fat To Fly'), I talked about how being overweight is a choice and some people debated the fact; that some people may simply be fat because of uncontrollable forces such as glandular problems and genetics.

*I would like to address this topic head on just so that I can set the record straight*

It is not my intention to offend anyone and yes, I do have family members who are sick and overweight...

My grandmother has diabetes and her feet are so swollen that she can't walk and has to use the wheelchair.

So yes, this is also a personal issue and deeply heartbreaking to see/know someone going through this.

I wished that nobody in the world has to go through something like that.

Yes, your genetics play a part in your overall weight but it is most certainly NOT the cause of gross ‘overweightness’. Even if being fat is caused by genetics, it is possible to lose weight by eating the right amount of healthy foods, increasing daily activities and exercising.

Other people have  also mentioned that the reason why some people can’t do anything about being obese because they have glandular problems. A simple blood test can confirm or refute this claim almost immediately. There are treatments that can reverse an underactive gland, which almost cures this problem entirely.

No, you don't have to live with that body.

Yes, YOU make that choice.

Are you going take control of your body or let your body take control of you?

Which brings me to another factor involving this issue: THE FOOD THAT WE EAT TODAY.

favorite-junk-food

Nobody would disagree with the statement - that nutrition is one of the most important factors that we need to keep in check of to maintain the wellness of our body.

But with the booming worldwide population and high demands for food, it is obvious that why we are not getting enough healthy, nutritious food – because cheap food tastes better and so much easier to obtain!

Many food companies realize that you need food every day, and play with the fact that there are two driving forces that cause you to choose the food you eat. It is based on PRICE and TASTE,  NOT NUTRITION and HEALTH.

These food companies give an illusion of cheap food selling you highly tasty treats at prices of $1-$10 a meal. These various junk foods contain almost zero nutritional value and are filled with unhealthy chemicals and antibiotics that are extremely bad for you.

Hey, a packet of instant noodles and/or a cheeseburger from any fast food joint costs less than making a salad and far more fulfilling!

Sure, you may think you’re saving money eating out all the time and spending less than $5 on a full meal instead of $10 on groceries but overtime, you will only realize you’re paying your dues with medical bills.

One of the major causes of thyroid gland problems is due to the lack of nutrition you may be consuming in your food.  We cannot simply put the blame on genetics and glandular problems; it is also the food that we eat today. However, I understand that not all of us have the freedom to choose what want to eat - for others, it is what they can afford.

How do you think the world will change effectively if organic food is cheaper than fast food?
