Don’t Believe Everything You See In Magazines… And Videos

We all know that 99% of all the photos you see in magazines have been retouched. But did you also know that the next generation of retouching is "reshaping" people in videos? You can now safely assume nothing you see in the media represents an actual person!

This really disappoints me because the more we do this, the farther and farther “normal” people will feel from the people they see in the media. That’s a dangerous thing for many reasons.

Share this video with someone you care about. Especially the ones who care a lot about their body and image.

  1. commodification of women….
Im going to share the video… :)

  2. For someone who posts pictures of Victoria Secret models to ‘motivate’ herself to workout more, aren’t you a victim (and to some extent, perpetrator) of the above-mentioned unrealistic imagery of women?

    • Critic,

Sure, those photos may have been retouched but the bodies of those models aren’t that much different than their edited photos. Models are real people too, except some show obvious signs of unrealistic diets. We are all aware of this to some extent :)

  3. Fay,

The point being made in the second video is that the media no longer represents realistic proportions and body shapes. Models and now, actresses, ARE different from their edited photos. They show obvious signs of photo-shopping and as highlighted in the first video, body reshaping, that cannot be attained by proper dieting and nutrition.

Can you honestly say that normal, real people with full time jobs or an education can look like say, Giselle, without the benefit of genetics, cigarettes, protein/amino acid shakes, eating disorders or surgery? There lies the standard of unattainability that the speaker in the second video is trying create awareness of and prevent.

Kate Winslet famously lost a third of her body weight in GQ thanks to photoshop. Let’s not kid ourself in thinking that’s not much different from reality.

  4. hmm..i have to agree with “critic”.. no offense though..
