KettleBlock – World’s SMARTEST Dumbbell

Homie Mark Enriquez back from Singapore was doing some window shopping when he stumbled upon the KettleBlock™ at the AIBI store in Parkway Parade.

I had actually been thinking about purchasing a Kettlebell for a while now but they come separately in different weights - 5, 10 & 20 pounds - which isn't ideal for me as I'd like something more versatile like the Bowflex®.

So when I saw the KettleBlock™, it was like a dream come true. Now I'm not a hardcore weight trainer or anything but this is something I'd definitely like to experiment and train with.

But with a price tag of SGD348 for this baby, I think I'll stick to the free weights at the gym for now.

9 Essentials In My Gym Bag

Bagspace.sg sent me an email a few weeks ago and asked if I could share "What's In My Bag", in response to my posts about "What's In Your Shopping Cart?". So here it is! My favorite bag of the moment is this Faux Leather Shoulder Bag (COACH-inspired) from YesStyle.com . I love that you can carry it on your arm, over your shoulder or even as a sling bag (it comes with a changeable strap). In fact, I love it so much that I have another one in baby blue (no longer available).

IN this bag, you will find at least 9 of my bag essentials...

1. Tiffany & Co. aviator shades I've had this for a year now and it goes with everything I wear, can't go wrong with it.

2. Adidas water bottle - Gotta make sure I stay hydrated!

3. Adidas training gloves - Wouldn't want the smell of iron or skin peeling on my palm when I'm doing weight training...

4. iPod Shuffle + headphones - Music keeps me pumped when working out.

5. Shiseido powder + brush - Just so my face won't shine like a mirror...

6. Bath & Bodyworks hand sanitizer (Japanese Cherry Blossom) - Do you have any idea how dirty public place (or even your own home) can be? Best to keep your hand sanitized, especially if you have a habit of touching your face or eating/picking food with your hand.

7. Abercrombie & Fitch '8' Perfume - My favorite scent!

8. Victoria's Secret body lotion (Honeysuckle Belle) - Daily moisturizing keeps your skin firm, healthy, and smelling good.

9. FOCAL Deodorant from Boots... - This is the best deodorant, ever! I always get my friends to get this for me when they visit Thailand. I wished they had Boots here. They have a few quality house-brand products. This deodorant spray in particular is great because it's fragrance-free, hypo-allergenic and all natural (Ingredients: Alum, Allantoin, Niacinamide, Propylene Glycon, Aqua) - it's almost like spraying water, except you'll smell good all day :)

Grocery Shopping: Chrissy’s List

Chrissy (originally from Singapore but now lives in Melbourne) sent in a photo of her groceries last weekend and proves that even though she likes her dessert, she knows how to shop for healthy food. Plus points for getting the essentials such as bananas, muesli, yogurt and even the fresh/smoked salmon and chicken mince - having these foods stocked means you're always set for breakfast and preparing a meal high in protein is as easy as pie. Although I am curious... Since she specifically noted that the milk was only for baking, where are the flour and eggs?

1. Bananas
2. Mangoes
3. Thai basil
4. Lebanese cucumber
5. Roma tomatoes
6. Fresh salmon
7. Smoked salmon
8. Chicken mince
9. Muesli
10. Yogurt
11. Milk (for baking)
12. Bread

Grocery Shopping: Tashination’s List

Tashie (Read: Tashionation.com) has been so busy with school and exams lately that she doesn't spend enough time at home to cook for herself daily. She recently just sent me a photo of her mini grocery shopping this week and I'm glad to know this girl is eating healthy despite all the stress! Are you sure you skipped the snacks for late night studying, dear? Just how do you do it? :P

So here's what she bought:

1. Soya Milk
2. Organic berry yogurt
3. Honey turkey cold cuts
4. Organic Tofu
5. Assorted greens

I like the healthy choices you made with the soya milk (Read: Soy Milk vs Milk), yogurt and assorted vegetables, although I'm not sure if this photo is complete! You have the cold cuts but where's the bread and lettuce? Perhaps the next thing you should share is the first meal you prepare with these groceries!

Grocery Shopping: Evonne’s List

Evonne, who lives in Kuala  Lumpur, just did her grocery shopping at Cold Storage last weekend and would like to share with us what she had in her cart!

1. Mineral water
2. Raisin bran cereal
3. Greens: salad, tomatoes, parsley & capsicum
4. Penne pasta
5. Prego sauce
6. Eggs
7. Cheese: gruyere & mozzarella
8. Multiseed bread & French baguette
9. Red wine (Wolf Blass)
10. Chacho's chips

I love how you even brought your own eco-friendly shopping bag to skip the plastic bag! Good thinking. This cart... almost looks like mine, except I don't buy capsicum because Charles is allergic to them. As much as I love my pasta, I usually opt for whole wheat penne pasta to balance out my love for a creamy based sauce. Oh, it's a rare treat. Thanks for sharing, Evonne!

Grocery Shopping: Roy’s List

Roy, from Indonesia, shares with us his grocery shopping for the week. It includes:

1. Peanut butter
2. Whole grain bread
3. Energen Instant oatmeal
4. Bananas
5. Apples
6. Soy bean snacks

I used to LOVE those instant oatmeal that comes in individual packets - just add hot water and voilà! The problem is, instant meals are usually high in sodium and/or sugar and in this case, the latter. A healthier option would be a warm bowl old fashioned Quaker Oats made with soy milk and served with fresh blueberries, topped with wholegrain biscuits/bread crumbs (a classic favorite first recommended by my grandy).

Soy bean nuts make a great snack and go well with salad for an added crunch! While they are a healthy snack, too many soy nuts can be fattening. A one-ounce, 120-calorie snack is reasonable, but two or three ounces daily will give you extra calories that soon will show up on the scale as added pounds. I prefer almonds instead because they are less salty :)

Grocery Shopping: Su-Yin’s List

Su (Read: Like Cupcakes? You'll Love 'Delectable' By Su) sent in a photo of what was in her grocery basket the other day and proved to me that she even though she might have a sweet tooth for dessert, she balances it out by watching what she has for her regular meals...

1. Low fat milk
2. Low fat yogurt drink
3. Nature Valley oatmeal bars
4. Salsa
5. Wholegrain bread
6. Lettuce
7. Turkey Pastrami

"I like bull's eye eggs with toasted bread, lettuce and turkey in my sandwiches. Sometimes with a dash of salsa and mustard too. The peanut butter Nature Valley oatmeal/energy bars are delicious and convenient for when I'm on the go so I always have them ready in my car."

A healthy choice for a sandwich meal, Su! A quick tip to make a the ultimate sandwich: Add crunch and amp up the condiments. Forget the limp lettuce, go for the spicy watercress or arugula and ditch the dill chips for crunchy pickled shallots. A dose of citrus juice and/or zest, chopped fresh herbs, Sriracha or minced chipotle chile will make that plain mayo or mustard sing.

I personally prefer to skip the mayo/mustard and opt for a spread of Laughing Cow's cheese (great with a cracker or on it's own too!) on my sandwich bread. I've never tried salsa in my sandwiches but I might definitely need to give that a try sometime!

Grocery Shopping: Alyssa’s List

My sister, Alyssa, who is now living in Tokyo, sent in a photo of what was in her grocery cart when she went shopping last weekend. (Read Grocery Shopping: The Must-Haves.) Check out what she got:

1. Milk
2. Chocolate milk
3. Fruit juice
4. Quaker oats, honey and raisins cereal
5. Instant noodles
6. Banana
7. Yogurt
8. Veggies & mushroom
9. Kit Kat
10. A bottle of wine

Gotta have the bananas! They're a good source of protein and fiber. It goes well with cereal and in a peanut butter sandwich too. You've made a healthy choice with the greens and yogurt but go easy with the instant noodles (dangerously high in sodium, I'd rather eat a bag of chips instead)! Perhaps you'd like to try buckwheat noodles instead if you'd rather not have brown rice or pasta.

Grocery Shopping: The Must-Haves

Just because I party a lot doesn't mean that I neglect my health or unaware of how much alcohol I consume each night. (Quick tip: Skip the sugary mixers. Drink on the rocks or dilute with water.) Don't think about the times you fail with your diet; or should I say, new lifestyle.  (Remember: Diets are temporary, lifestyle is a habit.) Sure, you may have just had a big night out and woke up with a huge hangover. Last night's greasy supper didn't help very much, your head is throbbing, you reek of alcohol and you are suddenly craving for fried chicken. It happens. Self-control is key. You may choose to go ahead and have some fried chicken and say to hell with looking good OR you could remind yourself of the damage you're doing to your body, and recover immediately.

It's important to know what you have in your kitchen because this is the first place you go to when you are feeling hungry or hungover (don't be tempted to call pizza delivery yet!). If you're trying to change your diet and lifestyle, it only makes sense to only keep healthy food in the house. When you're grocery shopping (Read: Grocery shopping while full vs hungry), focus more on breakfast foods and foods high in protein and fiber. I have this habit of looking at other people's shopping carts when I'm out grocery shopping... The fat lady ALWAYS stocks up on frozen food while the fitness guy fills his cart with mostly cereal, juice and lean meat/fish.

Here's what I recently shopped for this week:

4 boxes of Cheerios cereal (my favorite)
2 boxes of muesli
Weetabix
Wholegrain bread
Bananas
Cauliflower & broccoli
Spinach
Natural yogurt
Extra virgin olive oil
Orange juice with pulp
Apple and aloe vera juice
Oat milk

A good supermarket for fresh and organic vegetables would be Jusco, where I usually shop for my greens. Cold Storage and Carrefour has a better selection of cereal and imported goods like Weetabix ;)
